Hibiscus

Hibiscus is a very versatile, hardy plant that beautifies any garden in tropical conditions. There are a total of 14 distinct types of hibiscus derived from one common parent in the Hibiscus Genealogy Tree. There are several hundred species of hibiscus that are native to tropical, sub-tropical and temperate regions of the world.

Hibiscus contains anti-oxidants and Vitamin C. It is thus used as a medicine in many cultures especially in Chinese herbology medicine. Kenaf, is a species of hibiscus that is extensively used in paper-making. The tangy and flavoursome tea made from hibiscus is served either hot or cold and is enjoyed throughout the world. Dried hibiscus is edible and is considered a delicacy in Mexico. The Roselle type of hibiscus is used as a vegetable and candied hibiscus is used as a garnish on desserts.

And finally, strong bast fibres can be obtained from the bark of hibiscus amongst other sources.
